The opening act of Reykjavík Dance Festival an LÓKAL by Margrét Bjarnadóttir.
„If I was an instrument, I would be a cello that wants to be a drum kit.“
I wrote this in my diary fourteen years ago and now it´s time to explore what it means. At the same time I will launch The Reykjavík Dance Festival. In the old cinema that wanted to become an Opera house and is now a party/music venue. Somehow this all goes together.

About Commissions
Following RDF’s two award winning / award nominated commissions by Icelandic choreographers last year – Ásrún Magnúsdóttir with Church of Dance, and Erna Ómarsdóttir and Valdimar Jóhansson with A Lecture on Borderline Musicals – this year RDF continues to commission new work by three exceptional artists – Margrét Bjarnardóttir, Ásrún Magnúsdóttir and Lilja Birgisdóttir.
Each of these three artists take as their starting point the word concert. Taken not only as a musical event, but as it can be understood etymologically. Coming from the word concertare, concert finds its musical meaning in the generic action of striving together with others for unity, for agreement or harmony. Despite being aesthetically divergent, the common dynamic among all three commissions will be this search. Whether that search is made manifest as a call to action towards an audience, a collective dance, or a musical search for harmony.
